Essential oils enter the body through inhalation or penetration of the skin. Once the oil is in the body then the effects can be;
Pharmacological- the interaction of the chemicals with that of our body hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters, and other chemicals in our body.
Physiological-effects on the way that our body works. For example; relieves muscle tension, increases metabolic function and cell regeneration, Stimulates sensory nerves, promotes arterial circulation and venous drainage, Stimulates lymphatic drainage and lymph activity for immunity, Softens fatty tissues for easier re-absorption, Tones muscles by improving circulation and improves skin tone and texture.
Psychological- The way that oils affect our mind; relaxing, soothing, sedating, optimism, wellbeing, uplifting
The natural properties of the oils support many of the body's natural systems and support many conditions and their symptoms naturally with proven results.
When considering a blend an aromatherapist should take a number of things into account in relation to their training.
Odour - should smell nice
Client Type - ensure that the correct dilution adhered to and the safety data for each oil taken into account
The area being treated- 1% dilution on the face, nothing too stimulating later in the day and being aware of sensitive skin
Compatibility - Consider botanical families and the blending wheel
Notes - Top, Middle, and Base note blending. Top - first impression oil - highly volatile, Middle - the heart of the blend, Base - fixes the aroma to last longer and least volatile.
Clients Choice - What do they like, how do they want to feel, what are they doing afterward?
Cost - Take into the account the expense of some oils such as Absolutes and Ottos
Clients' objectives and needs- Remember mind, body, and spirit and the need to meet the overall objective.
Skin type - Are you treating a specific skin problem?
